We are looking for an experienced content editor to join our ChronicleLive news team, to spearhead our Google Discover strategy, as our new Discover Editor. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced journalist, content editor and Discover expert to play a key role in maximising our performance and visibility on the platform through data-led decision-making.

You will manage the newsrooms Discover opportunities and planning, both reactively and proactively. You will actively participate in editorial content direction and planning, keeping our editors and journalists updated on industry developments and ensuring we are prepared for significant opportunities to boost page views.

This role is home and hub based linked to our Newcastle Hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around Newcastle.

What will the role involve?

  • Shaping and delivering the Discover strategy for your newsroom to support the growth of Discover audiences across our network
  • Attending and playing a key role in conferences, meetings and newsroom planning to influence content direction from a Discover perspective, advising on Google Discover trends and playing a key role in content planning
  • Building Discover editorial calendars, communicating key upcoming events to editors, and managing forward planning efforts to establish authority on core topics as well as taking advantage of seasonal opportunities
  • Managing the day-to-day implementation of our Discover strategy in your newsroom, providing real-time feedback on articles to improve visibility on Discover
  • Spearheading the writing of optimised articles strategically commissioned to target Google Discover and working with editorial senior managers to embed Discover strategy in audience development plans
  • Daily analysis of performance both within the team and overall KPIs for the business, ensuring you deliver and monitor key projects/initiatives to meet growth objectives around Discover
  • Creating daily reports using analytical tools to make key content choices. identifying training needs and deliver latest best practice advice to teams
  • This role will involve weekend and evening shifts on a rota pattern, so a flexible approach is required

Who are we looking for?

  • You are a Google Discover Expert and experienced Content Editor with a good working knowledge of other Google news and content distribution platforms
  • You are an NCTJ (or equivalent) qualified journalist with a proven track record of working in an editor level position
  • You have an excellent news sense and always stay on top of the news cycle to allow you to communicate trending topics to newsroom managers and editors
  • You have extensive digital publishing and SEO skills
  • You are a supportive and encouraging people manager who will help instil best practices in your team and beyond
